Transmit moving pictures and sound over a standard 7 MHz RF channel. Analog PAL systems defined the global television broadcast era.

Core Concept

A television camera scans a physical scene line by line from top to bottom. The system transmits brightness variations as a continuous analog waveform. Engineers refer to the standard 625-line transmission as the PAL standard.

A blanking pulse turns off the receiver cathode ray tube during the horizontal retrace period. This prevents ugly diagonal lines from appearing on the screen. The composite video signal combines the picture information with these critical blanking pulses.

Sync pulses ride on top of the blanking level to align the scanning timing. Without these pulses the picture would roll vertically or tear horizontally. Color information gets added using a 4.43 MHz subcarrier.

Key Equations

The horizontal sync frequency determines how fast lines are drawn. fh = lines * frames calculates the required scanning rate.

Interlaced scanning divides each frame into two distinct fields. fv = frames * 2 gives the vertical field frequency.

Example
Given:\nTotal lines per frame = 625\nFrames per second = 25\n\nWhy this formula:\nThe horizontal line frequency is the product of total lines and frame rate.\n\nFormula:\nfh = lines * frames\n\nSubstitution:\nfh = 625 * 25\n\nCalculation:\nfh = 15625\n\nFinal Answer:\n15625 Hz
Exam Tip: Vestigial sideband transmission is always used for analog video. It saves spectrum bandwidth while avoiding the severe phase distortion caused by sharp single sideband filters.

Key Properties

  • Interlaced scanning draws odd lines first and then fills in the even lines.
  • The PAL-B standard separates the audio carrier by 5.5 MHz from the main video carrier.
  • Video information uses Amplitude Modulation to remain simple.
  • Audio information uses Frequency Modulation for better noise immunity.
  • The horizontal line duration is exactly 64 microseconds in the PAL system.

Quick Revision

  • A full frame consists of two interlaced fields.
  • Blanking pulses make the electron beam invisible during retrace.
  • Sync pulses lock the receiver oscillators to the transmitter.
  • Negative modulation puts the brightest white parts at minimum transmitter power.
  • High video bandwidth requires a wide channel allocation.
  • Exam trap: Using the total line time for active video bandwidth calculations instead of subtracting the horizontal blanking period.
