Standard SSB filtering severely distorts sensitive low-frequency analog video signals. Legacy television broadcasting directly solved this strict hardware limitation by using Vestigial Sideband modulation.

Core Concept

Practical analog filters absolutely cannot have perfectly sharp vertical cutoffs. Vestigial Sideband transmits one complete sideband and intentionally leaves a small vestige of the second sideband.

This highly specific roll-off curve mathematically compensates for the imperfect filter shape. The receiver side uses an exact complementary filter to perfectly flatten the final frequency response.

Baseband video signals with rapid 50 Hz frame rates strictly require this analog method. It completely avoids the severe phase distortion routinely seen in pure SSB quartz filters.

Key Equations

The fundamental mathematical bandwidth equation adds the main baseband frequency and the vestige width. The formula is exactly BW = fm + fv. The VSB filter must exhibit pure odd symmetry precisely around the carrier.

Example
Given:
Highest video frequency fm = 5 MHz
Vestige frequency band fv = 0.75 MHz

Why this formula:
VSB transmission bandwidth strictly equals the main modulating frequency plus the required vestige.

Formula:
BW = fm + fv

Substitution:
BW = 5 + 0.75

Calculation:
BW = 5.75

Final Answer:
VSB Bandwidth = 5.75 MHz
Exam Tip: The VSB transmission filter must always have strictly odd symmetry precisely around the carrier frequency. This geometric requirement absolutely guarantees flat frequency response after final demodulation.

Key Properties

  • VSB precisely transmits one full sideband and a specific small fraction of the second sideband.
  • The vestige completely prevents severe phase distortion of sensitive low-frequency baseband components.
  • Total transmission bandwidth strictly equals the highest message frequency plus the exact vestige width.
  • Analog broadcast television systems universally use VSB for the massive main video carrier.
  • The receiver strictly requires a perfectly matched Nyquist filter to completely reconstruct a flat response.

Quick Revision

  • Pure SSB hardware filters actively introduce totally unacceptable delays for rapid 50 Hz video signals.
  • VSB clearly offers a highly practical compromise between extreme bandwidth efficiency and signal distortion.
  • The transmission sideband filter must strictly exhibit pure odd symmetry exactly around the carrier frequency.
  • Simple envelope detection can completely recover VSB if a massive carrier wave is added back.
  • A typical television channel precisely allocates a 1.25 MHz analog vestige for the entire video signal.
  • Exam trap: strictly assuming VSB bandwidth exactly equals SSB bandwidth, always remember to manually add the extra vestige frequency.
